Severance Compensation

Federal laws require that a terminated employee has the right to receive all earned wages. Any compensation on top of that is could be considered severance compensation. Severance packages are usually described in an employee's initial contract, but are sometimes granted without. Failure to provide severance when agreed to in a contract is cause for legal action by the employee. The value exchanged in a severance package is not limited to financial payments. It may include insurance, a bonus lump sum, electronics or stocks. Agreements may also be made, for example, an employer will provide further job training or education after termination. This is completely up to the business and its financial well being.
